What would you like to be when you grow up?

Monday 17th March

Hello!

So, this is nearly the end of the term!

What did we do in class? We finished talking about jobs, for the moment!

·         What do you do? I’m a hairdresser.
·         Where do you work? I work at a hairdresser’s. (hair salon)
·         What does he do? He’s a reporter.
·         Where does he work? He works in a newspaper.
·         What newspaper does he work for? He works for The Times.

Why do you like your job?

·         He’s a mechanic. He repairs planes. He likes his job because he likes working with machines.
·         She is a sports instructor. She works in a hotel in Miami Beach. She works outside. She likes her job because it’s funny to teach people how to play tennis and volleyball.

·         He is a police officer. He wears a uniform. He likes his job because he helps people and arrests criminals.

What skills and qualities do you have?
What are you going to be?

·         I’m strong and brave. I’m not afraid of danger. I enjoy travel, fun and excitement. I can balance very easily. I’m going to be an acrobat.

·         She’s friendly and helpful. She isn’t shy. She likes talking on the telephone. She can use a computer and types very quicklyShe’s going to be a secretary.

·         He’s quick and careful. He isn’t patient. He likes trying new ideas. He can cook very well. He’s going to be a chef.

·         They’re very gentle. They aren’t afraid of animals. They enjoy touching them. They can understand how they feel. They are going to be vets.

We listened to some people telling us what they do at work and why they like their jobs.

·         He uses the internet and attends to meetings. He sometimes goes on business trips. He likes his job because every day is different.

·         She answers questions all the time and she speaks on the phone. She doesn’t like her job because it’s boring.

And you told me what you would like to be.

What would you like to be when you grow up?

·         María would like to be a nursery teacher because she likes children.
·         Nacho would like to be a police officer or a firefighter because he likes helping people.
·         Almudena would like to be a chemist because she likes chemistry.
·         Andrea would like to be a flight attendant because she likes planes. Or a vet, because she likes animals.

We say “an acrobat” because “acrobat” begins with a vowel sound “a”. We don’t say “a uniform”, because “u” in “uniform” isn’t a vowel sound.
We say “an hour” because “h” isn’t pronounced and “hour” begins with a vowel sound, not letter.

Work and Jobs

Monday 10th March

Hi everybody!

Yes, most of us like spring or summer because we are on holiday. There’s no class and we have more free time to go with our friends. The weather is sunny and hot and we can go to the swimming pool or to the beach.

Nacho likes the summer because he can go to Alicante. He can see his family and his dogs.
Andrea likes the autumn because the leaves in the trees have different colours: orange, brown, yellow…and the weather is still warm and nice.
Manuel also likes summer. He goes to France and to the beach.
María likes summer, too. The weather is hot and sunny. And she also likes the summer because it’s the season when her birthday is.
Almudena also likes summer for similar reasons.

What about me? I like hot, sunny and dry weather. I like the summer because it’s when I have more free time to spend with my family and friends. But when you get older you like all the seasons because you see something good in each of them.
Autumn, (the fall, in American English) is really nice because the leaves have different colours.
Winter is cold. (I don’t like cold weather, but I like the days when it snows and I enjoy Christmas very much)
And, of course, spring. At that time days start getting longer and the weather is warm. Flowers bloom, (appear) and everybody looks happy!

Enough of the weather and the seasons!
Let’s talk about work and jobs!

Remember:

“What do you do?” It’s the same as “What’s your job?”
But we are going to use “What do you do?” because it’s more common in English.

·         What do you do? I’m a teacher.
·         What do you do? You’re students.
·         What does she do? She’s an acrobat.
·         What does he do? He’s a chef.
·         What does she do? She’s a secretary.
·         What does he do? He’s a vet. (Vet is short for veterinarian)

Remember to use “a”, “an” before jobs. Only in singular. “A” before consonant; “an” before a vowel sound.

A doctor   an engineer   a teacher   a mechanic   a judge   an architect   an artist
A chefs    a doctors   a pilot   a shop assistants   a clerk

·         What does she do? She’s an acrobat.
·         Where does an acrobat work? An acrobat works in the circus.
·         Who works in the circus? An acrobat.

·         What does he do? He’s a chef.
·         Where does a chef work? He works in a kitchen.
·         Who works in a kitchen? A chef.

For homework, write at least five lines describing one or two jobs. Only one or two jobs; not five jobs. The example doesn’t count as one!

She is a nurseShe works in a hospital. She wears a uniform and she helps people.
She works long hours. She doesn't perform operations.

Interesting Conversation!

Monday 3rd March.

Hello boys and girls!

Player 1, what about homework?
Player 2 told us about the Oscar awards (prize, trophy) ceremony. She told us who got the Oscar to best actor and actress in the leading role. (The main actor, the most important in the story). She also told us about the dresses the actresses wore. She liked Angelina Jolie’s the best (her favourite dress was Angelina Jolie’s). Finally, she told us about the Oscar to the best movie and to the best animated feature movie.
But you didn’t know why the statuettes are called “Oscars”. The popular theory is that Margaret Herrick, Academy Award librarian and future Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave the statuette the name. When she first saw the statue in 1931, she said that it looked like (was similar to) her Uncle Oscar.

Player 3 told us about the Eurovision Contest.

This year the Eurovision Song Contest will be celebrated in Denmark, because last year’s winner was Danish. Semi-Finals of the 59th Eurovision Song Contest are going to take place on Tuesday 6th and Thursday 8th of May, the Final is scheduled for Saturday, the 10th of May. Some 170 million people from over 40 countries are expected to watch the contest .Thirty-seven countries have confirmed participation.
Player 3 enjoys watching the festival with her friends.

Player4 told us about “La voz”, a song contest on Spanish TV. Her favourite singers are two twins coached by David Bisbal. This program is broadcasted on channel 5. There are about 45 contestants and three coaches.

Player 5 talked about a type of wrestling (fighting) called WWE, although he doesn’t know what WWE stands for! This isn’t really a sport but a show.

We finished the class talking about the weather.

·           What’s the weather like today?
·           What was the weather like yesterday?
·           What kind of weather do you prefer? Why?
·           What’s your favourite season?
·           What do you usually do when it’s rainy?
·           What do you do when it’s snowy?

For homework don’t forget to write about ten lines telling me what your favourite season is and why you like it.
